Cause & Effect Connections Between Quality & Efficiency

If you have worked in healthcare for any length of time, even a few days, I am sure you have opinions about the quality of care, or efficiencies of the organization for which you are employed. Dr. Bruns, the instructor for our first Fall course on Quality & Efficiency has gone to great lengths to carefully select pertinent articles and case studies that will help any healthcare manager understand the complexities and inter-relatedness of competing quality concerns and efficiencies.

She designed this course with the following learning objectives in mind;
That students will be able to

  1. Share with colleagues how healthcare quality affects the cost and efficiency of healthcare delivery
  2. Apply methods of quality measurement and process improvement to everyday healthcare operations
  3. Understand the consequences of provider, patient and health plan decision-making on the cost of healthcare
  4. Develop actionable plans for improving healthcare value

This means, that while students are attending the six week course, they will be able to work on a process improvement project relevant to the work they are currently doing. It promises to be an exciting and interesting course.

Along with an interesting project, and wealth of articles, the text she has selected is "Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century" published by the Institute of Medicine.

Many students who have already attended previous healthcare management courses may have seen Dr. Bruns as a guest speaker. They can vouch for the fact that she is highly engaging, her presentations are quick moving, with several points of levity throughout. It will not be a dull class by any stretch! She has a fascinating guest speaker on the schedule discussing six sigma principles applied to healthcare concern, and an opportunity for plenty of group discussion.

This Fall is going to be a perfect time to start the Healthcare Management Certificate. If you choose to take the classes consecutively you could start in October and finish the program in June!
