Three Big
Announcements: Undergrad and Grad Credit Option Now
Available, Fall Classes Full, and NEW Leadership
Certificate now available - starts
January | |
|
|
Hello everyone,
This note is longer than normal, so bear with
me. Now Offering Undergraduate and Graduate
Credit I have the delightful pleasure of letting
you know that we heard you! Your request for the
Healthcare Management Certificate to be offered in both
undergraduate and graduate credit has been accomplished.
This was a major focus of mine over the summer months;
working with the faculty to add an evaluative component
that was rigorous enough to meet the Public
Administration Chair Neal Wallace's expectations and
accessible enough for professional development. Faculty
were excited to add a component that provides a stronger
exchange between instructor and student and many faculty
added a component that allows students to share their
learning among eachother. If you have ever heard of a
restaurant "soft opening" that is pretty much how we
began to offer the credit for this program. We started
offering it with the current class; Cause and Effect
Connections between Quality and Efficiency. You may have
noticed that we filled that class to capacity! So we
offered everyone in that class to take the credit option
if they so chose. Some have, some haven't. Those who
haven't maintain their non-credit status with the same
rich learning, engagement and compelling reading and
lecture. Those who have committen to paying the extra
cost of $100 and will complete the evaluative component.
In exchange they will get feedback from the instructor
on their work, share their knowledge with fellow
students, earn 2 credits and a letter grade. From
this point forward, all the Healthcare Management
Certificate courses are offered three ways; non-credit,
undergraduate credit or graduate credit. Consider
starting the program in January. Maintaining
the Financial Health of a Healthcare
Organization Good news and bad news here.
This course starts on November 13, with a fantastic
instructor; Bill Kramer. But, word must have gotten out
early on this one, because the course is already full!
The good news is we have started a waiting list, and
there is potential to get a few more people registered.
Please call our registration desk at 503/725-4832 refer
to course number BQ120-407 and you can be put on the
waiting list. Myself and the rest of the faculty have
been waiting for Bill's class since we conceived of it
around this time last year. When we finally got Bill to
agree to teach it, we felt it was a major coup. He will
be fantastic. I have looked over his materials and the
way he has designed the class, I think it will be fun
and interesting. And, believe me, I am a tough customer
when it comes to thinking that finance is fun and
interesting! -- Lori Silverman, Program

| Introducing the New Healthcare
Management: Leadership Certificate
|
|
I am very proud to
announce the newly created Healthcare Management: Leadership
Certificate. In building the
Healthcare Management Certificate, our goal was to focus
on the manager in the middle of a healthcare
organization struggling with issues coming from all
angles of the organization. According to students in the
program, we have definitely achieved that
goal!
But if one listens to healthcare
professionals in the field, they will tell you that
there is clearly an increased hunger for professional
development from senior level managers in a peer-to-peer
setting. They have a specific set of needs that is
slightly different than the healthcare management
program. So, myself and some senior practitioners
rolled up our sleeves and built a short, focused, more
intense program for a healthcare
manager with significant healthcare management
experience. This program is strictly professional
development ie; no credit. There are four courses;
management ethics, public policy, strategy and
leadership. They are designed to be very small classes
providing an opportunity for rich, frank discussion on
some tough practical and sometimes lofty concepts. Each
course is short, offered primarily during the day. You
can complete a single course in 4 - 5 weeks; the entire
series in six months. Read more about the leadership
certificate here. If you are interested in
visiting with me about it, please contact me at
503/725-5848 or scroll down for a link to my email
address.
