Healthcare Management Ethics Do you read the NY
Times magazine column the Ethicist? I almost always read
it, makes for great brunch discussion. Do I agree or
disagree - why or why not? But, when posed with an
ethical question at work the decisions tend to be less
entertaining than a news column and may have higher
stakes involved. When this happens it is important that
we don't get lost wandering in the abstract, unable to
apply ethical principles to our decision
making. Kerry Barnett, CLO of Regence will teach this
course in four sessions in January. He understands how
easy it can be to talk philosophically about ethical
decisions, but he can also help guide that discussion to
some clear step-by-step processes that come to solid
conclusions. Kerry leads a team of regional ethics
professionals at Regence. In class he promises to lead a
small group of students through anecdote-rich trials,
perils and accomplishments of ethical challenges.
The best part? Because the class size will be so
small, students can feel comfortable talking openly and
frankly about just about anything (healthcare related!)
Don't miss this opportunity to spend some time with one
of our brightest local talents (
read bio here). Class is scheduled
Fridays during the day!
Culturally
Competent Patient Centered Care James Mason is
back by popular demand! Dr.
Mason plans to approach the curriculum in the same
accessible and interesting format as before. Students in
his class are encouraged to think about cultural
competent patient centered care by starting first with
their own perspectives on personal culture and medical
care. During the six week course, students will begin to
understand why we say that Dr. Mason has a gift for
talking about an anxiety charged topic such as cultural
competency and patient care in a calming manner. "Aha"
moments are practically palpable during about the third
week of class when he starts to talk about the patient's
voice. Here's what one student said on their
feedback form, "I was surprised and very pleased to be
sitting with a group of people representing such a broad
cross-section of healthcare careers. My table had
someone from pharma, a clinic manager, a physician
instructor, a diversity consultant, a lab supervisor,
and a pharmacist who only recently arrived from Turkey.
It was far more intriguing to discuss barriers and
successes in cultural competence with people who had
such diverse work environments. . . " The course is
rich with opportunities for self-study and offers a
great deal of encouragement to research areas that
really interest you. Two very different courses for
Winter but both quite compelling in their own way. Great
content, great instructors, real world knowledge. If you
