Management Ethics designed for senior managers starts January 18
Culturally Competent Patient Centered Care designed for mid-level managers starts January 8

Healthcare Management Ethics

"This course will explore current and emerging ethical tensions in today's health care environment, with an emphasis on how these issues play out in typical health care organizations."

Allow me to give you just a snapshot of what Kerry will cover in class.

  • A classic healthcare struggle between the work of health and administrative duties neatly packaged in the University of Washington Physicians and Children's University Medical Group case study

  • Martin Latz' work on negotiations. Latz is former negotiator on the White House advance team and founder of the Latz Negotiation Institute

  • Operationalizing ethics; top down, hiring ethical people, writing ethics and conflict of interest policies

  • Michael Porter's work on corporate philanthropy and the competitive edge

  • An ethical decision making process that can be applied in challenging circumstances like underwriting, managed care, marketing, financing, and care for the uninsured

OK, I have to stop here because I don't want to give away the whole course. Suffices to say that in 4 weeks, you will cover plenty of resource material when you are back at the office.

Don't miss this opportunity to spend some time learning and debating important ethical challenges of today with one of our brightest local talents ( read bio here). Class is scheduled Fridays during the day!

Culturally Competent Patient Centered Care
Are you thinking that culturally competent patient-centered care only applies to those who actually give direct care? I hope not. Consider signing up for this class because you will find out how a better understanding of cultural competency can improve your work.
The trend in cultural cometency in a healthcare environment is to think from a whole systems perspective, not just the interpersonal relationships between doctor and patient. For example, research recently funded by the Commonwealth Fund (October 2006) talks of the "Seven dimensions of patient-centered care:

  • respect for patients' values,
  • preferences, and expressed needs;
  • coordination and integration of care;
  • information, communication, and education;
  • physical comfort; emotional support and alleviation of fear and anxiety;
  • involvement of friends and family;
  • transition and continuity."

    If you take a look at the above list and consider what you do for your organization, there probably isn't an item on that list that you don't have influence on every day.

    The neat thing about James' course is that while the information I just shared with you is included in his course - it is part of the optional reading list! His course is so rich with experiential learning components and discussion, that the reading and supportive documentation is like the frosting on the cake. I promise, if you are new to this topic, this will be a safe friendly course to explore a fascinating dimension of healthcare.
    Finally, a thought from a former student of his course;
    "Dr. James Mason is a wonderful professor who brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, compassion and humor to each class. He provides useful resources and helpful hints to support us in our journeys toward cultural competence. As he says, "It doesn't matter where you are today (on the continuum of cultural competence), where you are tomorrow is more important."

    Have I peaked your interest? Great. You are welcome to register here before the holiday rush comes and the course gets filled.
