The following newsletter discusses instructors and coursework of the Healthcare Management Certificate and the newly created Healthcare Leadership Certificate at Portland State University.

Healthcare Economic Trends and Impact.
Begins Tuesday, May 6.

Have you ever had a colleague call you up after an exciting meeting anxious to talk about their new plans? Well, I just got off the phone with Dr. Al Weiland who teaches our next course that combines fantastic guest speakers with frank discussion and small group work.

He had just got out of a planning session with some of his guest speakers and they are very excited about their fun, interesting and NEW ideas to update the course, and enhance the materials. His enthusiasm is contagious!

Among other guests, Al has invited back Liz Baxter of the Archimedes project and a new guest Susan Stearns of 100% Access Coalition, Lane County United Way. They will wrap up the course with a summary discussion of John Kotter's new book Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions.

Al has kept the best of the course from last year with interesting texts and inspired lectures. If this sounds interesting or compelling and you want to discuss it, you are always welcome to call me at 503/725-5848.
Thanks, Lori Silverman, Program Manager

What do employers think of the Healthcare Management Certificate?
Linda Gregory, State Business Office Manager for US Oncology is very pleased with the holistic, integrated approach the program has taken on managing in a healthcare environment. Gregory sent multiple employees through the Healthcare Management courses offered here at PSU. She has since promoted two of them to management roles.

The course is taught by Mitch Greenlick who has designed a high quality course that includes some lecture and special guests, and most importantly, the students will have time in each session to craft legislation. Greenlick has committed to bringing the body of work to the Oregon legislature next session.

The students will decide the topic of the legislation!

A perfect course for;
-- a young legislative affairs professional,
-- someone with a real desire to be heard on a specific issue seeking creative avenues,
-- A legislative affairs professional wanting to hone their skills,
-- or someone who merely likes to dabble in this arena
