Competent Patient-Centered Care |
|
When you have six
great courses composed and ready to present as a
comprehensive program which course do you offer
first? Initially, I thought this would be a difficult
question to answer, since each course is compelling in
its own way. The instructors are well prepared and armed
with excellent curriculum. But then, we had our
first faculty meeting. The instructors shared their
vision for each individual course and sought
opportunities for integrating the curriculum. Once the
conversation started to flow, it became obvious that an
integral component to each of the course topics begins
with an appreciation and understanding of one's own
perspective, then the patients you serve. It was
clear that we had to start the program with a baseline
understanding of cultural competency. Earlier
this month at the first Information Session, Dr. James
Mason gave us a glimpse of what would be covered in his
course, and frankly, he stole the show. Dr. Mason
clearly bases his delivery in theory, then in a gentle
way exposes our anxieties about other cultures using
appropriate humor and stories. He follows up his
stories with practical tools you can use back at your
office when faced with similar situations. I feel
lucky to have Dr. Mason teach our first course for the
Healthcare Management Certificate. It is an excellent
way for anyone to not only learn about cultural
competency, but to get a sense for how the rest of the
courses will be presented. If you choose to sign up
for the course, be sure to ask Dr. Mason to tell the
story of the woman with tomatoes in her shoes! -- Lori Silverman, Program
Manager
