"Everyone agrees that the US health
care system is broken; and will break the bank if
something isn't done. Health care costs are affecting
almost everyone, or someone they know. We'll explore in
this class what the problems are; and create some
alternatives for a better future." - Al
Weiland.
Healthcare Economic Trends and
Impact, Allan Weiland, MD. Former President and
Chair, NW Permanente, PC and former Regional Medical
Director, Kaiser Permanente NW. Begins Tuesday, May 1.
Registration open.
Just
like Al says above, this course delves into current
problems of healthcare, and different alternatives
available. But he also says that students will identify
alternatives as well. This is how I think this class is
different than attending a lecture or talking about it
over the dinner table.
A brief glance at his
list of guest speakers tells you that the content will
be compelling and comprehensive;
- Jack Friedman, CEO Providence Health Plans,
- Brenda Bruns, CMO HealthNet,
- Liz Baxter, Project Director for the Archimedes
Movement,
- Bill Kramer consultant to the Oregon Business
Council
Students will also read various
chapters from the following books;
- Epidemic of Care: A call for Safer, Better and
More Accountable Health Care by George Halvorson and
George Isham
- Lives at Risk: Single-Payer National Health
Insurance Around the World by John Goodman, Gerald
Musgrove, and Devon Herrick
- The Cure: How Capitalism Can Save American Health
Care by David Gratzer
So, the course is chock
full of fantastic speakers and meaty content both from
experiential learning exercise and corresponding text.
If you feel like you are drowning in the bureaucracy and
systems every day, and you would like to engage in
stimulating conversation that identifies solutions; this
course is for you. Register
now before it is too late. -- Lori
Silverman, Program Manager

of this program? The follwing is a quote from a
current student. "Last night was exceptional! I
was surprised and very pleased to be sitting with a
group of people representing such a broad cross-section
of healthcare careers. My table had a representative
from Pfizer, a customer service representative from a
cancer treatment organization, an internist, a lab
supervisor, and a pharmacist. It is far more intriguing
to discuss these issues with people from such diverse
work environments." - Angie Hurley, Clinic Manager,
