Tuchschmidt Creates Compelling Management & Leadership Course

moreAs the registration process winds down for our first course in the Healthcare Management Certificate, I am driven by enthusiasm for the Deciphering the Management and Leadership Matrix course taught by Dr. Tuchschmidt (pictured at left).

This was a difficult course to build in that there was pressure to simply offer a typical leadership course. I had strong feelings that it would be a disservice to offer only a leadership course without opportunities for skill development in management. I found a friend in Dr. Tuchschmidt, Director of the Portland VA Medical Center, when I learned his perspective on management and leadership is similar to mine; good management includes both a solid grasp of management and knowledge of the art of leadership, that there is a balance to the everyday manager's life of when to use either skill or talent.

But securing Jim as the instructor for this course was actually a greater coup than I had originally thought. His personal interest in film making has influenced the curriculum in a very creative way. Through film, his students will identify different management and leadership styles, discussing both successful and unsuccessful strategies from each style and cross-referencing them to their own personal styles. The movie he selected to view is a surprise for the students attending, but it will definitely incite strong opinion and excellent dialogue.

His course addresses management and leadership issues, strategic thinking, organizational change, making tough decisions, negotiation and managing conflict.

In the final session, students will again appreciate Tuchschmidt's personal interest in film when they become actors in a negotiation scene. Students will practice negotiating and debrief by watching themselves apply learned techniques.

I really think that because of Jim's course design students are going to have a very powerful experience. If there is any single course you are considering taking - this might be the one to consider. Check out the dates and register here. -- Lori Silverman, Program Manager
