Tools for Healthcare Managers to Improve

Research lead by PDC asked healthcare managers what they wanted to learn to improve their performance. The results strongly supported offering short-term evening and weekend courses taught by leading experts.
The following newsletter is the first in a series to introduce the instructors and coursework of the newly created Healthcare Management Certificate.

Healthcare Faculty - One Foot in Medicine and One Foot in Business

When building the certificate, we identified experts on each topic to design and deliver the individual courses. Criteria in selecting instructors included two questions: were they practitioners in their expertise and could they translate their expertise into experiential learning in a classroom full of adult learners.

Dr. James Mason, Director of the Office of Multicultural Health, intends to create a comfortable environment for healthcare professionals to discuss the setbacks and opportunities they face when interacting with cross-cultural colleagues and patients. His course, Culturally Competent Patient-Centered Care, is the first in the series and begins January 9th. "I think it's important to communicate a rationale for cultural competence, culturally diverse health beliefs, and systemic and individual barriers to cultural competence," he said.

Dr. Jim Tuchschmidt, Director of the Portland VA Medical Center and instructor in the program, cites a need for deeper study of management and leadership skills. Students will self analyze their own strengths in balancing management skills and the art of leadership. Tuchschmidt will help students get new insights into this delicate balance that today's healthcare executive needs. He'll lead a course called Deciphering the Management and Leadership Matrix.
