We have so many new
people signed up for this newsletter since our last
edition. Thank you for your interest in the programs! I
thought it might be helpful to give a description of
boththe Healthcare Management and the Healthcare
Management: Leadership Certificates to help the new
folks get up-to-speed.
We offer two
certificates 1. Healthcare Management (3-6 yrs
healthcare/management experience) 2. Healthcare
Management: Leadership (7 - 10 years healthcare
management experience)
The Healthcare
Management Certificate is a series of 6 courses
designed for the mid-level manager within a healthcare
organization It exists to serve the professional that
seeks to upgrade their skills either to do better in
their current role or to advance to the next leadership
position. Many students in the program participate to
stay connected and current on management issues specific
to healthcare.
The Healthcare
Management: Leadership Certificate is designed for a
healthcare leader that has mastered the technical and
relational skills needed for good management yet seeks
to dig deeper into the conceptual skills of leadership.
Many individuals are experts in their own right, but
need to have dialogue and challenges with their peers in
safe small classes to ensure continued professional
growth. There are fewer courses, all offered during the
day. Topics include ethics, public policy, strategy and
leadership.
Read on to learn more about the next
few classes in each of the certificates.
Deciphering
the Management and Leadership Matrix starts Feb
19th. The link above takes you to our course
description for Dr. Tuchschmidt's class. But the course
descriptions never tell the whole story, like is he a
good instructor or will it be worth my time. Even though
I attended all of the courses in this Healthcare
Management series, and I experienced things first-hand,
my comments may come across as just "sales-y" anyway.
So, this time I am going to leave it up to other
students. Here is a quick list of student comments from
the last time Dr. Tuchschmidt taught this course.
"The course on leadership has been very
applicable to my work. The Managing Transitions text has
helped me through our own organizational changes. Also,
the negotiation skills session has helped me develop an
awareness of how I, and others, negotiate." Matt
Seibt, Pfizer
"The variety of instructional
strategies used was refreshing! This wasn't just theory,
it was practice and I feel like now I can effectively
use the strategies/methods introduced not just talk
about them."
"I enjoyed the group
dialogue, the relaxed atmosphere, and ease of
participation."
"It helped me come to a
better understanding of my current role in creating a
vision vs. managing resources. I am re-defining my role
to be more helpful in removing barriers for my managers
allowing them to focus on key information and events as
they manage their own programs." Herb Ozer,
Providence Health Systems
"Participation and
exercises, matching reading to learning and then
reviewing."
"Variety of participants' experience
led to interesting discussion and real-life
examples."
OK, I have let the student quotes
tell you, now it is your turn. This is one of our most
popular in the series, don't let it sell out on you. Register
now. -- Lori Silverman, Program

I am pleased to announce that
the Northwest Health Foundation will sponsor four
students to complete the Healthcare Management
Certificate. This opportunity ensures two things;
that the professionals working for safety net clinics
have access to University level learning on healthcare
management issues, and that their contributions to the
class can help inform all students' learning.
PSU's Professional Development Center sincerely
appreciates Northwest Health Foundation's mission that
includes a commitment to building a robust public health
system through collaborative relationships. We are proud
to be one member in their network of
relationships.
Are you interested in being a
sponsored student? Are you an employee of a safety
net clinic in Oregon? For now, we are simply asking
those interested to send a note of interest to Lori.
Once details are confirmed we will post online.
Stay tuned to this newsletter as well, we will include
any updated information in future newsletters
too.
