The following newsletter is the fifth in a series introducing the instructors and coursework of the newly created Healthcare Management Certificate at Portland State University.

A Peak at the Content of the Deciphering the Management & Leadership Matrix Course

At the recent healthcare summit I ran into the well respected Dr. Chuck Kilo of Greenfield Health. He was so complimentary of our cast of instructors for the program. I wanted to point out his specific compliment of Dr. Tuchschmidt. I thought he hit the nail on the head.
"National performance data demonstrates that the VA tops the charts in quality, and within the VA, Jim Tuchschmidt tops the charts on leadership. Jim is a phenomenally effective leader from whom we all have much to learn."

Dr. Tuchschmidt's selection of content for the management and leadership course supports Dr. Kilo's compliment in that students will walk away with a solid understanding of a cross-section of successful models from outside and within the healthcare arena. Students will take a look at SW Airlines, the National Hockey League, NASA's Challenger disaster, and of course the re-inventing of the VA Healthcare system.
His course is pretty much half full already, click the link below to see if you are available for what promises to be a very creative approach to a great topic.

So, how is the class going?

Last time I wrote to you we were just getting ready to start our first class on Culturally Competent Patient Centered Care, it has been a very fun and informative class. We are learning how to be authentic in our communication with those of whom we may not be familiar by stating our pure and inquisitive intent, and apologizing when we make mistakes ensuring not to repeat them. We have a record number of students and we are hoping to see the same kind of enthusiasm from you for the next course.

I am not the only one looking at the upcoming schedule with great anticipation. Check out what Angela Hurley, Clinic Manager of Outside In has to say about her upcoming class titled Technology Innovations and Reality.

Recently we have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Datena to pilot his revolutionary technology in our clinic. After working with them and the technology, I can't wait to see what Dr. Datena and Mr. Moon have to share during their course. There is no future healthcare without healthcare information systems so I might as well keep one step ahead of the advances.
