Contract and Customized Training

Questions a company should ask before starting a new training program:

  • What performance issue will be addressed?
    • What's broken?
    • Is this really a training problem or a motivational issue?
  • What changes in performance are expected?
    • Skills? Attitudes?
  • How will I know when those changes have been achieved?
    • Do I have a wat to measure the change? Production output? Increase in X?
  • How will the training be evaluated by the instructor?
    • Smile sheets? Follow-up evaluations? Interviews?
  • What structural or cultural changes are being done to support training?
    • A class doesn't change the system that may be the real problem?
  • What information do I have to support the need for training?
    • Have I done a needs assessment? Checked performance reviews?
  • Do I design the training or do I let an outsider do it?
    • How much do I trust a trainer? Do I approve curriculum?
  • How much time will I spend doing the planning work?
    • Planning is the critical part of training. Am I willing to commit the time?
  • How much latitude can I give a trainer in developing and delivering a course/program?
    • How much ownership do I have in this material? How important is it to me?
  • What criteria do I use to select a trainer?
    • Experience in the business? Education? References? Other credentials?
  • How much proprietary company information do I want the trainer to know?
    • Sensitive information may be discussed. Is there a non-disclosure expectation?
  • How unique do I want this program to be?
    • Off the shelf? Totally customized?
  • Who owns materials created for my company's program?
    • Can I replicate this program with my own staff doing the training?
  • What is the time line?
    • When do I want to start and end? Evenings? Weekends? During the work day?
  • How much time can my employees spare to support this program?
    • All day? Half day? Two hours at a shot?
  • What is the budget?
    • Training costs money. Do I look for quality or low bidder, or??
    • Is it better to use local talent or go to Stanford?
  • Who will be the project manager for this training?
    • How much do I want to know about how the program is going?
  • What kind of training works best with my company?
    • Classroom? Web based? Will they read before the class starts? Do homework?
  • How will I (CEO) support the training?
    • Am I willing to attend? To open the program? To follow-up with participants?
