The Accelerated Supervision Certificate is different than what the Professional Development Center has provided in the past in that it is offered as a cohort model. Students take the entire 40-hour curriculum as one course. This model has many benefits, such as the opportunity to learn with the same group throughout the program. It also provides the instructors an opportunity to put together a capstone project integrating all elements of the curriculum into a challenging final-day case study.
The program provides introductory supervisory skills training designed for the individual supervisors who are:
- Current supervisors with one to three years experience
- Newly promoted supervisors
- Emerging managers and supervisors aspiring to new leadership roles
We have identified two areas that help define the supervisory role for individuals:
Performance Management - We will look at the role of supervisor in managing the performance of others.
Understanding Motivation – Why do people work? How can we get the best out of others?
These themes carry through the entire five days of learning. Instructors have designed the Accelerated Supervision curriculum to begin with effective communication skills. Team building and employee development are addressed next. The third day is focused entirely on human resource basics, helping students understand the parameters that HR law provides. The fourth day is focused on what every mid-level professional faces on a daily basis and what supervisors need to manage: managing change and managing conflict. The final day is spent working with previous themes and additional content on decision making and problem solving. The instructor leads them through a real-life situation and small groups are charged with identifying solutions.
